We loved our visit from Steel today, learning all about resilience and the importance of sleep, healthy diet, being active, hydration and showing gratitude (noticing glimmers). Can anyone beat Steel’s record of 757 burpees nonstop in under an hour?#pshe pic.twitter.com/FLHRxZ2Lkq

As part of Safer Internet Day, year 2 explored a variety of dangers online and discussed how to respond to them. They had some excellent ideas and good knowledge of the safety features of various apps. They created posters to teach younger children about what they had learnt. pic.twitter.com/dWyOSidsdH

Lunar new year celebrations last week pic.twitter.com/GAQmtKUjeU

2nd May 2025

Dear Parents

How lovely to go into a long weekend with blue skies and warm sunshine. It has been lovely to be in school this week as everyone has been happy due to the change in the weather. Fingers crossed it lasts for bank holiday Monday.

Monday 5th May

This is a bank holiday so there will be no school on this day - please make sure you have this date in your diary.

Mrs Stanger

Earlier this week I informed the parents of the children in Moomin class that Mrs Stanger is pregnant with her 2nd child. The baby is not due until September so she will be with us all the way through the summer term which I know will please the children, parents and staff. I’m sure you will join in with me in sending her and her family congratulations.

SATs week, Year 6

SATs week is rapidly approaching and will be on the current Year 6 children in a blink of an eye. SATs start on Monday 12th May until Thursday 15th May. Mrs Watson and her team will soon be organising the infamous breakfast for the children and will be ensuring that the children are ready to go and shine.

Aspens Catering, Thursday 22nd May 2025, 2.45pm-3.45pm, Taster Session

As some parents are aware we have had very mixed views regarding Aspens catering and the provision of school lunches for a while now. Having spoken with Aspens at great length they are keen to meet with parents and provide a “taster session” for children and parents, after school on Thursday 22nd May 2.45pm-3.45pm. This is an opportunity for parents and children to come along, meet various personnel from the company and try the food on offer as well as view the current menus.

Aspens are working hard to correct some of the issues that have caused the school dinner numbers to drop and I think that this is a positive step forward.

I think that it is important for the school, parents and Aspens to work together to improve the quality of the service moving forward and I hope that many parents can come along to get your questions answered and be reassured that your voice is being heard by the management team at Aspens.

Mark the Science Man - Family Science Event - Hands On Science, Thursday 22nd May 6.30pm-8.00pm

Thank you to those parents who have already enlisted to come along to this year’s family science challenge with the lovely Mark. We will keep this live for 2 more weeks to allow for a few more families to sign up. Mark's event is on Thursday 22nd May at 6.30pm and it will be great to see you all there. There is no cost to this and no need for tickets however if you can indicate if you are coming along, by completing the Edulink form by Monday 12th May, I can give Mark some rough numbers so he can prepare the equipment.

Chess

I am so incredibly proud of HA's phenomenal chess team for winning the small school's trophy in this week's Harpenden tournament!

We came second place out of every competing school and top out of every small school. It was a very close final which we lost with 2.5 wins to 3.5 wins against a much bigger school. Something to really celebrate! I was especially proud of the gracious sportsmanship shown at the competition after every game regardless of the outcome – this is something which was particularly noted by the organisers. Congratulations!!

Harpenden Museum Family Day

Join us at Harpenden Museum on Saturday 3rd May for our family day of free activities to celebrate the 80th anniversary of VE Day. Come and learn about Harpenden's role in World War 2. Pick up a self-guided family walking trail of key sites around town, get stuck into some arts and crafts activities, or try on wartime clothes! We will be open 11am-3pm, in the Eric Morecambe Centre, and look forward to seeing you there!

You can also pop into St Nicholas' Church, one of our trail stops, for tours of the bell tower from 11:30am-1pm and cream teas in Cornelia’s Café from 10am-1pm.

If you miss us on the day, the walking trail can also be downloaded from the Harpenden & District Local History Society website or picked up from the museum at a later date.
