24th January 2025
Dear Parents
We have had a great week in school with plenty of learning experiences. The week started with Monday morning assembly celebrating Martin Luther King Day. The Year 3 children went on their train journey to St Albans Cathedral as part of their History learning this half term. The children, staff and parents all agreed that it was a fabulous learning experience for the children. Incidentally the cathedral is hosting a wonderful “Museum of the Moon” exhibition currently. (See info below) which I am sure would interest certain families and children.
Year 5 continued with their swimming this term and we have been visited by some other teachers from our sister schools to see some of the systems and processes we have in school. All in all, a busy week.
Year 3 St Albans Cathedral School Trip
On Tuesday, Year 3 had a fabulous time at St Albans Cathedral for their Roman Festival! The morning began with a visit from a Roman soldier and we looked at their armour. Then we split into groups and re-enacted the story of Saint Alban who gave his life to protect others. Next we had a 'dig through the ages' and explored a mixture of real and replica artefacts from different periods in history.
After lunch we explored traditional food that the Romans would have made and eaten - we took it in turns to make the dishes and then had a taste! Most of us were glad that times have moved on and we don't eat some of those dishes anymore!
Thank you to FoHA for their donation towards the cost of the trip and to our parent volunteers who joined us for the day.
Lockdown
Each year, we carry out a 'Lockdown' practice at school. We always inform parents and children in advance to give you an opportunity to discuss it with your child beforehand. This year, the lockdown practice will take place on Tuesday, 29th January. Teachers will explain the procedure to their classes, ensuring the children understand that it is only a practice and addressing any questions they may have. Once the drill is completed, we will notify all parents via Edulink to keep you informed.
Online safety
We have had incidents since we have returned after Christmas, regarding the appropriateness of some of the programs/online games the children are watching. This tends to focus around games/ programs that older siblings are playing and that the younger siblings get involved in too. I have attached a helpful newsletter to this newsletter discussing this issue for parents. Last week we did have PSCO in school to discuss this very matter with our Year 6 children so it is a very real concern of the school. We would appreciate your help in ensuring that older siblings do not engage their young brothers / sisters in games they are playing due to the age differences.

Parents' Evening, 11th February and 13th February 2025
Parents’ evening sign-ups were sent out on Monday, so please make the most of our earlier time slots and ensure your meetings are arranged.
A quick reminder: children who already attend Owls do not need to sign up for anything additional, as they will automatically join Owls early.
If you require the 'crèche' facility for your children between 2:30pm and 3:20pm, please sign up via your Edulink form.
This is a trial initiative aimed at easing the demand for earlier appointments while supporting the wellbeing of our staff. Once the event concludes, we will evaluate its effectiveness and decide if this approach is worth continuing.
Trust Concert - Grove Theatre, Dunstable, Tuesday 11 March, 6.00pm, Choir and Orchestra
Please save the date. Tickets have not yet been released and we will shortly be sending out logistics via Operoo to the children participating in this event.
Lunar New Year
Lunar New Year is just around the corner. As you may know, we have previously decorated the school entrance for Diwali, Christmas, and other festivals of light. With the Lunar New Year approaching, we would love to invite parents to help us decorate for this special celebration as well. If you’re able to assist, please get in touch with the office or Mrs Withers.
Safer Internet Day, 11th February 2025
This year, Safer Internet Day is on the 11th February and the theme is ‘Too good to be true? Protecting yourself and others from scams online'. Safer Internet Day is the UK’s biggest celebration of online safety. Each year it covers an online issue or theme that speaks about the things young people are seeing and experiencing online. Created in consultation with young people across the UK, this year Safer Internet Day will be focusing on the issue of scams online and for young people, how to protect themselves and others, as well as what support is available to them. We will be recognising this in school with an assembly and activities in class. Below is a link to social media checklists which parents may find helpful.
