21st June 2024
Dear Parents
This week's highlight was without doubt Sports Day at SJL. The children this week have been doing a variety of sporting activities. On Tuesday we hosted an inclusive Sports Day, inspired by the upcoming Paralympics in Paris this summer. It was a wonderful celebration of diversity and athleticism! On Thursday the excitement continued with our Tiger Cheer workshops, bringing energy and school spirit. On Friday we had had a special assembly with world-record holder Freestyle Footballer, Ash Randall. he showed us his incredible freestyle football tricks. He challenged some children to perform some of his tricks and then he set Mr Leung and Mr Gandhi to a head-to-head competition! The children all had the opportunity to attend a football freestyle workshop.
The highlight for many of us was Sports Day on Wednesday. Many thanks to parents who came along to cheer along their children and FoHA for providing the drinks and biscuits during the event. They also organised the ice-cream van which was very popular! It was terrific to have a new sports day winner in the Amber family group. I love the tradition of having the oldest and youngest member of the group to collect the cup. We have never had 2 children share the same birthday before so it was nice to have two Year 6 children share the glory!
Below are a selection of photos from the day. Many thanks to my staff who adjusted their working weeks to be with us during the event, and especially Miss Harvey who took on the lion's share of organisation.

Our Children Shine at the World Games Event!
We are thrilled to share that four of our children represented Jamaica at the prestigious World Games event, held at Oakland's College and hosted by the School Games partnership. Under the guidance of Mrs. Davies, our children had an incredible experience, especially in karate where they had the unique opportunity to train with Jordan Thomas, an ex-world champion in karate. Our children learnt invaluable techniques and even got to test their skills against the world champion himself, aiming to tag him with his lightning-fast legs!
This event was not just about sports, but also about embodying the core values of determination, resilience, courage, and belief.
St Albans District Primary Schools Swimming Championships
Following on from competing at the St Albans District Primary Schools Swimming Championships Mylo and Clark will be competing at tonight's Hertfordshire Inter-District Primary Schools Swimming Championships. We wish you both the very best of luck!
Year 6 Online Safety Talk with our Police Community Support Officers
Today the local police visited Year 6 to talk about online safety and how to keep us safe online. They talked about issues like cyber-bullying, hidden identify, inappropriate images and online privacy. The police officers shared examples of how people in our community have been badly impacted by cyber issues.
River Lea, Year 4
Year 4 had an exciting and educational trip to the River Lea, where they explored the local ecosystem and learnt about the importance of rivers in our environment. The children enjoyed a guided walk along the riverbank, observing various plants and animals that call the River Lea their home. They participated in fun, hands-on activities such as water testing and bug hunting, which helped them understand the role of clean water in supporting wildlife. The trip not only enhanced their knowledge of natural science but also fostered a greater appreciation for nature and the need to protect our waterways.
Reminder
There is no school on Monday 24th June and Tuesday 25th June due to our final INSET day and a Trust Conference day. I do hope you manage to take advantage of this time away and if anyone has taken advantage of the discount organised by FoHA to Legoland, that you have a lovely time.
SEND
I wrote a few weeks ago to parents offering a meeting with our Director of SEND and Safeguarding for any parents of SEND children or those interested in hearing the SEND developments from HCC a year after the SEND Ofsted. Ms Laden Shirazi will be in school on Monday 1st July at 9.00am to meet to discuss SEND provision available in the Trust, and the developments over the past year.
Eco-Club news
A reminder that on Friday 28th June the Eco Club would like all children to come to school dressed as an animal, plus a donation on Parentpay to raise funds for the chosen charity of W.W.F.
Parent Pay is now set up to receive donations as we are a cashless school.
New Reception Parents' Meeting
On Thursday evening we welcomed new parents into school for our Reception 2024 class. It was lovely to meet them and tell them all about our school. Beat School Uniform, our new uniform supplier, set up a display of our uniform.
