Art and Design
Purpose and Aims
Purpose
For pupils to be engaged, inspired and challenged, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. They should also know how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.
Aims
- To develop ideas from starting points of sketching, pattern, texture, shading and exploring/ developing their original ideas
- To master techniques in painting, collage, sculpture, print, textiles and digital media
- To take inspiration from great artists, classical and modern as well as nationally and international
Provision
Our curriculum is categorised in 2 ways
- Breadth - which gives pupils experiences of a range of artists, craft makers and artistic movements both classical and modern.
- Depth - which helps pupils to think and act like historians
Whilst coverage is our goal for the “breadth” element, repetition and increasing the understanding is our goal for the “depth” element.
Our curriculum drivers shape our approach to teaching art and design so that every opportunity is taken to relate art and design to the needs of our pupils. Art and design is studied throughout each academic year and across each key stage so that pupils can gain a growing developmental understanding of the matters, skills and processes in our curriculum. Coherent contexts for learning engage and involve pupil.
Progression and Assessment
Our progression has 3 key objectives which mirror the 3 aims of the subject. We set out our expectations around Chris Quigley Essentials “mile stones” approach. Each milestone has a set of indicators that re repeated throughout 3 cognitive domains: Basic (We call it Paddling), Advancing (we call in snorkelling) and Deep (we call it diving). It is expected that the vast majority of pupils will have an advancing understanding by the end of the milestone and some will have a deep understanding.
Assessment and reporting
We will assess the pupil’s depth of understanding each term and use this to forecast as to whether pupils are on track to meet our curriculum expectations for the end of the milestone.
Monitoring, evaluation and improvement
The role of the leader in monitoring pupil’s outcomes is to audit teacher’s judgements. This is done collectively in staff meetings and then collated by the leader. The leader then works collectively with the teachers to examine the strengths of the provision along with the areas for development for the provision. The leaders then create an action plan to improve achievement. The leader keeps track of the improvements they have secured over time to understand how effect the provision is.
Year 5, Dahl Class, Gargoyle Art
Year 6 Art Topic Rich & Poor - William Morris inspired watercolours
One of the downsides of Lockdown is we don't have any parents or visitors in school to appreciate the beautiful art work on display in school.
All of last term Mrs Davies and Mrs Duncan (lovingly known as Dave and Dunc during art lessons with the children), guided and inspired the children with the wonderful art work of William Morris. The children worked with such resilience, passion and desire to create their pieces of art work - we both truly amazing by their level of application. The results are terrific and worth sharing with you all.
Year 1 Elmer Class, Titanic paintings
Elmer were specialist artists using their skills to recreate a painting of the Titanic. Excellent use of tints and shades Year 1!
Year 5 Dahl Class, Clay Diva lamps
In Dahl class, we have made Diva lamps out of clay to celebrate Diwali. We rolled the clay into a ball, used a glue stick to make the bowl shape for the candle and then added decorations.
Year 4/5 Dr Seuss & Year 5 Dahl Class, Abstract Ordinance Survey Maps
We created abstract ordinance survey maps that linked to our topic ‘No Place Like Home’ where we researched our local area. We developed upon skills from the beginning of the term when looking at an artist called Chidi Okoye to create the overall effect
Year 1 Elmer Class, Colour mixing
Elmer were learning about colour mixing in their art lesson, an essential skill in order to enhance their understanding and develop their progression throughout their artistic journey.
Year 3 Potter Class, Watercolour techniques
Amazing artists in Potter class! They were excited about Christmas and were experimenting with the different watercolour wash techniques ready for their Christmas card designs. They also used watercolour to create Charlie Mackesy inspired art.
Year 6 Shakespeare Class, Watercolour techniques
Year 6 were getting excited about Christmas in art! They were using a recent study of William Morris designs to produce inspired drafts of festive foliage for this year’s Christmas cards. They incorporated: symmetry, 90 degree rotations, half and repeat patterns.
Stone Age Drawings, Year 3
Great team work in Year 3 Potter class this week as we invented ideas for a new adventure story! We have been savage stone age artists too experimenting with oil pastels and charcoal to create our stone age shapes.
Year 4/5 Dr Seuss Class, Chidi Okoye inspired paintings
Dr Seuss impressed us this week with their amazing art work based on pieces by Chidi Okoye. What a talented bunch!
Mandala Patterns, Year 5 Dahl Class
What a relaxing afternoon Year 5 created their own Mandala patterns.
Some stunning outcomes!
“The meaning of the word mandala in Sanskrit is circle. Mandala is a spiritual and ritual symbol in Hinduism and Buddhism, representing the universe. The circular designs symbolizes the idea that life is never ending and everything is connected. The mandala also represents spiritual journey within the individual viewer. “
UK Landmarks, Year 3/4 Kerr Class
Welcome back Kerr Class! I hope that you have all had a restful and wonderful summer break. Kerr Class have settled into the new academic year brilliantly and we’ve already been working hard and getting used to our routines. The children have demonstrated their artistic skills this week by drawing and sketching different UK landmarks to coincide with our topic for this term: ‘Land of Hope and Glory’, they have also shown resilience and positivity during our maths sessions for problem solving. It has been lovely to see them supporting each other and challenging themselves. In English they have already completed their Cold Task and have really impressed me with the pride they have taken in the presentation of their work, as well as using some imaginative adjectives. It has been a fantastic first week back and I am really looking forward to this year!
Mondrian Inspiration, Year 1/2 Elmer Class
Elmer class have had a fantastic first few days, settling into their new classroom and getting to know new friends. The children have been busy being artists and looking at the work of Mondrian. They focused on his use of primary colours and simple 2D shapes and used mixed media to create our own versions of his paintings. They particularly enjoyed using a ruler to create their own shapes and patterns.
Hundertwasser Inspiration, Year 2
Children learnt about the Artist, 'Hundertwasser,' and looked at how he was inspired by art. We looked at his art work called Poppies. We spoke about the importance of the poppy symbol.
Year 6 School Trip to the V&A Museum
Yesterday Year 6 had an AMAZING day at the V&A to visit the Frida Kahlo exhibition and learn about the inspiring resilience she showed throughout her life and to explore the ‘Future Starts Here’ science and technology of the future exhibit. The children (and adults!) were incredibly engaged, curious and playful and behaved beautifully throughout. Lots of deep moral and ethical issues to reflect on from exhibits over the coming weeks in class. It was lovely to see the children so happy at lunchtime playing in the paddling pool and putting into practise some of our mental health awareness learning: yoga, fresh air and cold water in one to encourage positive mental health! So proud of each and every child and so grateful for our wonderful trip.

Beast of the East
On Wednesday, 27 February 2018, Year 6 braved the ‘Beast of the East’ and travelled (via several trains and tubes!) to Dulwich Art Gallery for a wonderful David Milne art workshop and tour of the art gallery. The trip links to our North America topic as the artist was Canadian and painted American and Canadian landscapes. The children were so engaged in both sessions and we learnt lots about perspective, complementary colours, dazzle spots and more!
We were all very proud of our growth mindset in finding alternative travel routes due to broken down trains and snow-related cancellations.
We will be setting up an exhibition for you to view our art work later this term so watch this space!
